YUNYAO HU

Yunyao Hu, who was born in China having never touched contemporary art before her studies in London.  Her work has been noted for combining the art of language and semiology along with the mysterious traditional Chinese philosophy, Tao.

Inspired by Taoist theory and new English calligraphy, Yunyao’s practice is centralized around the philosophical thinking of life. She explores how Tao affects people's understanding of life in this world through the use of symbolic graphics interchange format and installations.

The audience may get a sense of overwhelming feelings about conventional Chinese culture from yunyao’s artwork due to her frequency of using Chinese elements. The Taoist amulet is also always used as a symbol by yunyao herself within her work. Meanwhile, she communicates with her viewers with words she created by combining English and Chinese calligraphy together.
