Chen's work discusses 'whether an audience can achieve an emotional or spiritual connection through art? ' As a mother, she continually discusses the relationship between the mother and child. Exploring the emotional and spiritual connection through art has become her doing things, and she combines the use of religion and spirituality in her art practice.
Her art practice focuses on the child with the mother, the mother is for the child, and the child is for the future, and the child's flesh and blood are connected. The mother's emotions and love for the child are the eternal links of love. During her process of getting pregnant and raising two children, she felt the fragility and preciousness of human life. Her artwork is rooted in a sensibility of Classicism. The feeling of mother and child revealed through artistic creation to paint her self-portrait, her daughter and son.
With the concepts of "transformation "and "hybridization", Yi-Chiao Chen makes use of the iconic Western classical image and through the addition of the Asian character in the composition to reflect the 21st century in contemporary art.
