SHIJIA ZHANG

In my recent art practice, I pay more attention to the disadvantaged groups in our current society. According to European Institute for Gender Equality, disadvantaged groups is “Groups of persons that experience a higher risk of poverty, social exclusion, discrimination and violence than the general population, including, but not limited to, ethnic minorities, migrants, people with disabilities, isolated elderly people and children.”

Focusing on the people who live in the shadows is also important as this make the world aware and able to help out for the betterment of our society. The main media of my artwork is sculpture along with ceramics, installations and photograph. Through different expressions, I can fully express my artistic concept to the audience. By using the mold casting method and sticker printing technology, I enjoy working across and mixing mediums. Works of arts that has the ability to awaken the senses of people into knowing what the current state of the living environment is, are important as it catches the attention and possibly diverts the efforts of people into making relevant changes. I think my art practice is a tool that can be used not only for appreciation of beauty, but also for the assessment of our society.
