NICOLA SIEBERT-PATEL

Nicola is a multidisciplinary artist driven by concepts of religion and spirituality and the need to create meaning through belief systems. As a female artist her work also responds to current affairs.

Much of her inspiration is fed by ancient yogic texts, trying to interpret what 'God' is in the context of a non-believer.  Using religious iconography to see how value and meaning can be reinterpreted. The power of nature, beauty and destruction, life and death, the euphoria experienced when a crowd gather, be it at a music concert, sports event, or place of worship.  Man’s search for belonging, community, ritual, ceremony, rites of passage, marking big occasions in life.  She is constantly searching for that numinous experience and aims to represent that through her art. A big question for Nicola is how to take big concepts about our place in the universe and try to simplify them visually.

Nicola experiments with different materials in order to do this.  Sometimes the material dictates the artwork and other times the idea dictates the material, from painting and printing to sculpture and video.

Being a member of the Dogma19 art group has added another dimension to her work recently.  As a collective they decide on a new material to work with for specific exhibitions.  The aim of this is by restricting themselves with a set of rules, it allows for more creativity and they learn new skills of working with unfamiliar materials in the process.  For the current Crypt exhibition ‘Immurement’, the Dogma19 group have chosen to use cement.
