MINQI XU

Her artwork is based on the psychological influence of human hidden desires, subconscious and secrets. Inspired by Sigmund Freud's theory about the connection between dream and subconscious, and instability of memory, her video works investigate the strange feeling within familiar scenes.

She often uses mixed media, with a focus on video and installation to create an surreal scene and change the exhibition space. In her videos, she builds up an uncanny way of telling a story. The materials are borrowed from well-known films or daily scenes, and transformed into new works with a different perspective by utilizing post-production to modify and edit them. This fabricates new narratives that lead viewers into a dreamlike world by manipulating footage and foregoing conventional linear narratives.

The works bring audience into a scene which arouse their curiosity and let them immerse themselves into the work. An invisible and imagined wall, keeping the distance from audience and artwork, is broken down by inviting audiences to interact with it, and explore the story or intention behind it. The interactive installation offers audiences a chance to get a deeper understanding of her work through their sense, by touching, listening, or watching.
