LILIANA ODERSTONE
In my multimedia installations, I explore how stress of urban living resides in the body basing my research on the first hand experience of being a spa therapist. My work aims to not only confront its audience with the issue of an inability to relax but also offer a way out. I utilise such therapeutic approaches as a guided relaxation, aroma therapy and visualisation. All three elements in the installation: a spoken word, an object and a scent are referencing each other through the use of a metaphorical visual and verbal language.
I draw a parallel between a spa offering both physical and a psychological therapy to its clients by a means of treatments and a church offering a psychological therapy by a means of prayer and confession. Both institutions offer a release from a burden of some kind. Objects and words that are associated with a a spiritual release are used within the work. Candle wick is incorporated into the sculpture tying around the metal frame of the clothes rack and the pillows to each other. The word `salvation` concludes the looped audio making it prayer like.
