KAI WANG

Kai’s research question is, "Can historical symbols have an impact on an individual's identity?" This question arises from a reflection on self-identity, in relation to his life in London. He is interested in the relationship between personal identity and historical backgrounds, this includes both individual history and the macro-history of culture.

Within disparate dialogues, He has realised that discussing culture and history, can quickly establish a tacit understanding and favourable impression.  Similarly, when he reveal his origins along with the history of China, he is not only interested and curious to describe and manifest his own identity, but he is also responsive to conversations in regards to other cultures.

Historical symbols are sometimes used as representatives of certain cultures, such as the Chinatown buildings, Greek sculptures in museums and ancient Egyptian mummies, etc. These seemingly unshakable, solid cultural symbols represent the traditional and the civilized foundations of specific countries. In the current Internet age, do people get to know each other by their own historical symbols? Are there any new cultural symbols, that reflect the civilization of a particular contemporary society? This is a point of discussion that he often wonder and think about.

His work combines numerous classic symbols of Western history, whilst questioning the way people understand history and their inherent impressions. At the same time, his project also includes his own personal history and background, as his own voice ultimately represents the new generation and their collective observations and opinions on political matters.
