Having lived abroad and travelled extensively, Gail Theis has a strong awareness of what connects us as humans from all corners of the globe. She has a large family spread around the world that inspires her to look for the similarities we have from wherever and whatever walk of life we come from.

 

The images she paints are relatable to all of us on some level. She strives for a strong narrative in her paintings, searching for that sense of drama in the familiar and the quotidian. Using a combination of photographs to compile her images, she questions how we relate to the past and where we are going in our futures.

 

Unpacking the theme of ‘Immurement’ has given her scope to consider deeply the many choices we face, and how they might lead us towards or away from our goals. Do we unconsciously trap or wall ourselves into dead ends?
