DB YAN

Her works mostly revolve around day-to-day life or past events, focusing predominantly on history, psychology and philosophy but I am eager to study other perspectives of seeing time, life and emotions. It is very important for me to respectfully honor other people’s stories and experiences, not only as so-called artists but also more importantly, as unique individuals whose lives are certainly different to mine. Frankly speaking, She simply enjoys the presence of other people’s creative processes, learning about different personalities and studying my reflective thoughts. Not only the visual aspect of past events, but also the relationship or the encounter between the idea of ‘myself’ and ‘otherness’ during those times, are two graceful sources she usually takes inspirations. They are equally beautiful and genuine to me and they are the drive and force for me to work and to create my own narratives.

Yan approaches in terms of unfolding projects have been mainly focused on hand-made, laborious and single-handed qualities in appearance of either displayed objects or singular drawings. Although she currently prefer unpolished character and rough edges of the artworks, it would be interesting to have dialogues with those who have successfully refined their works in the matter of choosing certain materials, concepts and how works should be exhibited. She also decided to try by myself: adding selected elements that are mass produced, commercialized in order to build the ‘conflict’ as it is a key element to evoke feelings. At the same time, she can hopefully push further my own interpretation of art and collaborate with those who share similar insights of producing artworks, contributing to the creative process together.
